The Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) is the science operations center for several NASA missions, including the Hubble Space Telescope, the most famous space

observatory in history. We also lead the science and mission operations for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and will perform parts of the science operations for the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope. STScI is also a recipient of many prestigious research grants and contracts. STScI is looking for a Web Architect with a thorough understanding and comprehensive background in the design, development, and support of web environments and architectures. Strong knowledge of relevant IT industry trends as well as experience and technical leadership in the design, architecture, and implementation of web and IT solutions.

This position requires access to ITAR regulated material and qualified applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents.

Your Role & Responsibilities Include:

  • Collaborating with Engineering and Developer staff to create, design, build, deploy and operate internal and external Web sites using best and secure practices.

  • Determining sources of Web page or server problems and resolve via ticket work.

  • Implementing updates, upgrades, and patches in a timely manner to limit loss of service and vulnerability exposure.

  • Creating and documenting guidelines, best practices, and policies for website development.

Your Experience, Skills & Qualifications Required:

  • Required understanding of and experience in developing and supporting front-end web servers (ex. Apache, NGINX) and backend web application containers (ex. Tomcat).

  • Required experience with SSL/TLS certificate management, maintenance, and infrastructure support.

  • Required to have proficiency with various operating systems (ex. Linux, Windows, Mac) and scripting languages (ex. shell, Python, Perl).

  • Required understanding and application of standard security principles (ex. OWASP).

  • Required experience using Ansible or other configuration management tools to automate and enforce system configurations.

  • Required experience managing and overseeing the process of moving web and applications from development to test and to production environments.

  • Ability to work and collaborate with other technical staff is essential.

Your Experience, Skills & Qualifications Preferred:

  • Preferred experience with Single-Sign-On (SSO) infrastructure (ex. Shibboleth, OKTA).

  • Preferred experience configuring, implementing, tuning, and supporting web frameworks (e.g., Django, Flask).

  • Preferred experience with installation, maintenance, and basic functionality of web applications (ex. Confluence and Jira).

  • Preferred strong written and oral communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.

Required Education and Experience:

Qualified candidates possess a Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or technically related field with a minimum of five years of relevant experience in a formal IT organization.

The position level and salary are commensurate with education and experience.
